An exceptional day for the club and players this past Sunday in Richmond. Both the U13 Girls and U16 Girls overcame opposition from Chilliwack to claim their respective Coastal B Cup Championships. The wins come almost ten years to the day since the club last won Coastal Cup trophies. To win the trophies both teams needed to win six games on the trot – in itself a remarkable achievement.
In the first game the U16 Girls raced out to a 3-0 halftime lead before injuries and tired legs took their toll and their opponents clawed their way back into the game with two second period goals. Emily Bradshaw started the scoring in the fifteenth minute finishing off a cross from a short corner routine involving Alisha Murtland and Natasha Gottfred. Natasha then added her name to the scoresheet five minutes later getting the final touch from a Katherine Filmer corner. The team’s third goal, and Natasha’s second, came after good work down the right flank from Sydney Murphy lead to a far-post tap in. The second-half Chilliwack enjoyed the wind at their backs and they threw everything at the Fusion girls. A couple of uncharacteristic defensive errors near the beginning and end of the second-half allowed space for Chilliwack to fire home making the final minutes more than a little tense. In between the Chilliwack goals the Fusion team probably should have notched an insurance marker or two but in the end the girls held-out for the win.
The U13 Girls game immediately followed the U16 Girls game at Richmond High School. It was a game of few real scoring opportunities, but the Fusion ladies definitely had the better of what few there were and the Chilliwack goalie made one fantastic save off an Annette Babcook effort that might otherwise have ended the contest. But they couldn’t find a way through and for the fifth game in succession the U13 girls went to extra time and then penalty kicks. Jadyn Paltiel made one save and Fusion shooters scored on all five of their efforts to secure the win.
Both teams now look forward to the Island Invitational Cup this coming Saturday in Nanaimo and the Provincial B Cup Chmapionships, July 5-8 in Kelowna.
Congratulations to players and coaches on their success!
